Design Of Belgian
Belgian design is hot, hot, hot – swiftly taking the place of Swedish design in the trendiest style. Why Belgium, as opposed to say, The Netherlands? According to my friend, Ron Empel, owner of Empel Collections – a custom lighting company, and a native of Holland, the sleepy county of Belgium is home to two extreme classes, the ultra rich and the ultra poor – with very few in the middle. The Netherlands, by contrast, is a country of the middle – with few wealthy citizens and few poor. Where there is extreme wealth, there is usually good design to support the upper class’ desires and Belgium has been producing some very good design lately. It all started a few decades ago when the interior designer, antiquarian Axel Vervoordt, moved into a castle, made it his home and shop and invited the world to see his wares. Riding on Vervoodt’s coat tails, a group of architects and designers are now cashing in on the sudden wealth of publicity and now Belgian Design is THE look to have. The traditional Belgian style – not its contemporary style (which is plentiful) – is quiet and monotone. Few printed fabrics are used; instead plain linens and deep-hued velvets are favored. Houses in the country are renovated using antique elements – ancient stone floors, beams, marble staircases, and acres of limed wood - everywhere. The accessories are overscaled and very few – books are usually plentiful. Sofas are austere - large, long, and slipped – the opposite of our soft, down-filled cushions. Lighting fixtures play a big part in the design – oversized always, either lanterns or crystal chandeliers are used. Textures are a very large part of this style – rough, rustic woods and stone surfaces are played against smooth, shiny crystals and glass. To truly understand the Belgian look, the publishing house Beta-Plus is a great place to start.

The Tlemcen house
The Tlemcen ecological house uses cellulose wadding and flagstone within a wooden framework. Wood's low thermal inertia, low construction cost, and low thermal transmission make it the material of choice. Double-glazed windows and airtight external doors aid insulation, and the south-facing living area enables collection of solar radiation. The house uses solar-powered heaters with exposed sensors on the south side, generates electricity via photovoltaic cells, and makes use of ground cooling. Heating the house is expected to use no more than 15 kilowatt hours per square meter per year (kWh/m2/yr), and the total energy demand is expected to be 50 kWh/m2/yr. That is a small number when compared with the total energy demand of 220 kWh/m2yr for a conventional house.
To put those numbers in perspective, consider the 2004 guide to energy efficiency in buildings published by the UK's Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). The guide cites energy consumption benchmarks for typical existing buildings as 417 kWh/m2/yr from fossil fuels plus 79 kWh/m2/yr from electricity, for a total of 496 kWh/m2/yr, or almost 10 times the energy requirements of the Tlemcen house. Even the CIBSE "good practice" standards of 247 kWh/m2/yr from fossil fuels plus 44 kWh/m2/yr from electricity, for a total of 291 kWh/m2/yr, are much greater than the energy goal's of the Tlemcen house.

House In Paris
The residence was entirely built using wood panels placed on a pedestal (due to the irregularity of the terrain). Completely prefabricated in a workshop, the house was then delivered to the site to be assembled in no more than two weeks. The most intriguing element of the crib is the pergola, or the unfinished roof, with a functionality explained by the architects as follows: “on the one hand, it takes the archetype of the context, inserting the project in its environment without disrupting the urban rhythm, on the other hand, it won’t accommodate a closed roof that would become a catch-all attic or a wasted space. So we have inserted inhabitants in it, and have left it open by transforming it into a vegetable terrace, intimate and sunny“. The layout of the project is highly flexible; with very few adjustments, the space can be remodeled, due to the modular design approach.

Modern House In Mexico
If you are building a house in Mexico, plan on being there during the construction. If not, your house could turn out quite different than what you had planned. Be sure to get a good builder (albañíl). Ask friends and business acquaintances for recommendations, and make sure that the builder is being recommended because he is an experienced and reliable builder, not because he is a great guy.
Plan to visit the construction site at least once a day to check on progress. Mexican construction crews make decisions as the work continues, often ignoring blueprints (or, more likely if you are using an albañíl instead of an architect, sketches) that show the dimensions of windows and the placement of electrical outlets. When you are onsite, check progress and make yourself available to answer questions. Try not to micro-manage. Things in Mexico are done differently than they are in your country and if you've chosen a good construction crew, they know what they are doing. But you'll still want to keep an eye on things and correct any mistakes or misconceptions sooner rather than later.

Deign House In Rusia
The First Active House in Russia is energy efficient and easy to operate. To reduce CO2 emissions and optimise energy performance, the building must be considered as a whole, not just the sum of its components.
The house exploits a variety of energy sources that are integrated in the overall design. Free energy from the sun is the primary energy source of the house. The features contributing towards a positive energy balance include a highly effective heat pump, thermal solar collectors for production of hot water and a PV solar cell system to generate electricity.
VELUX solar thermal collectors designed for installation in combination with roof windows exploit the heat of the sun while providing a visually appealing and technically optimal solution. VELUX solar collectors can generally provide up to 65% of the energy required to produce domestic hot water. The sun is the most powerful source of energy we have and we should make maximum use of it.
The orientation and design of the house make it possible to utilise daylight more actively. The windows should be considered as energy contributors. They are placed strategically to allow for solar heat gain and optimum natural ventilation. The energy requirement for basic lighting in large parts of the house is minimised by effective use of daylight.
A tightly-sealed construction is vital for achieving low energy consumption. The walls are highly insulated with multiple layers. Special highly compressed gypsum is added on the inside of the walls to add thermal mass to the light timber frame construction.
The results of an energy calculation performed by the Passive House Institute in Russia show that the specific consumption of energy for heating during the heating period is 38 kWh/m2/year.
